Know Mithila

Mithila : The Land That Preserves Its Wisdom — In Words, Walls & Pickles.

Mithila is a cultural and historical region in the northern part of Bihar (India) and eastern Terai of Nepal. It is not just a place, but a civilisation that predates modern state lines. Mithila finds its earliest reference in the Vedas and Ramayana, famously known as the birthplace of Sita—the daughter of King Janak and Queen Sunaina. The ancient kingdom of Videha, established by King Videgha Madhav from which our brand “Videgha” draws its name, once flourished here, known for its learned philosophers, poets, and deeply rooted traditions.

Traditions That Withstand Time:

Mithila is a region where tradition isn’t a festival—it’s a way of life. Every aspect of life is infused with rituals, symbolism, and a strong connection to seasons, land, and community.

From birth ceremonies (Chhathi) to marriage rituals (Maithil Vivah) and death customs, everything follows ancestral patterns that have remained untouched by modernity.

What makes Mithila unique:

  • Respect for nature and use of natural elements (leaves, mud, sun, seasons)

  • Emphasis on community over individualism

  • Deeply matriarchal food culture – women own the kitchen, the knowledge, and the tradition

Food in Mithila is deeply seasonal and spiritual. It’s made to align with your body’s natural needs, climate, and crop cycles. And nothing represents that better than Achar.
